UNDRESS CIRCULARITY

Measuring Circular Impact - Methodology and Guide for Practitioners

An assessment of the electronics industry in Germany

This new report introduces the Circular Business Model Impact (CBMI), the first practical methodology to measure the real environmental impact of circular business models – focusing on the product use phase. Developed by Circularity in cooperation with Deloitte, Fraunhofer IZM, Systemiq and 12 industry partners, the report provides both industry insight and a practical step-by-step guide for companies to apply the methodology.

What to expect from this report

The report provides a practical, real-world methodology to evaluate circular business models – based on actual usage behavior of B2C and B2B customers that was captured first time for this work.

It covers the following key topics:

  • A new approach to evaluating the impact of circular electronics business models

What to expect from this report?

  1. A New Way to Measure Circularity
The UNDRESS Circularity project introduces the CBMI methodology—a robust, data-driven framework to assess the environmental impact of circular business models (CBMs), accounting for real-world use and consumer behavior.
  2. Tackling the Use Phase Blind Spot
Unlike existing assessment frameworks, the CBMI method zooms in on the often-overlooked use phase of products, analyzing how CBMs affect user behavior and its environmental effects.
  3. Circular Electronics Are Still Emerging
Only 19% of users in Germany own second-hand electronics, and just 1% have rented devices—highlighting the untapped potential for circular models. However, in the case of a smartphone for example, circular business models can only mitigate about 50% of yearly emissions. The remainder must be adressed by product design, production and end-of-life strategies.
